Celebrating Child Safety Week at The Den Kit Co.

At The Den Kit Co., our mission has always been simple: to inspire wonder and adventure through creative, screen-free play in the great outdoors. As we mark Child Safety Week, we’re taking a moment to reflect on why safety is so important - not just in the design of our toys, but in the experiences we create for children through outdoor play and exploration.

Why Child Safety Week Matters

Organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), Child Safety Week is a vital reminder for parents, carers, and educators about the everyday risks children face - and the small steps we can all take to keep them safer. For us, it's also an opportunity to talk about a topic close to our hearts: how safety and adventurous play can go hand-in-hand.

Outdoor Play and Healthy Risk

At first glance, the idea of “risky play” might seem at odds with child safety. But in reality, healthy risk is a critical part of childhood development. Whether it’s building a den from scratch, balancing on a log, or using simple tools, these experiences teach children problem-solving, resilience, confidence and coordination.

We believe that when children are given age-appropriate opportunities to assess and navigate risk, they become safer in the long run - not more vulnerable. It’s about supported exploration, not eliminating every bump or scrape. Our kits are designed to encourage adventure, while giving parents peace of mind that the materials are safe, durable, and thoughtfully made.

Toy Safety Is Non-Negotiable

We’re proud to say that safety is built into every stitch and tent peg we include in our kits. At The Den Kit Co., we take toy safety incredibly seriously:

  • Every product undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets the standards set by UK and EU toy safety regulations.

  • We carefully source materials that are non-toxic, robust and child-friendly - no shortcuts, no compromises.

  • Our kits empower children to take ownership of their play while giving adults the tools they need to supervise safely.

Safety doesn’t have to mean boring or overly cautious.

Building Confidence Through Nature

One of the most powerful ways we can nurture safety is by helping children grow confident in the world around them. When kids are encouraged to explore nature, they become more attuned to their surroundings, more aware of their bodies, and more respectful of potential dangers.

That’s why our den kits are more than just toys - they’re invitations to adventure. Whether it’s the weight of a mallet in their hand, the rustle of leaves as they crawl into a freshly built den, or the triumph of creating something from nothing, our kits are designed to let kids experience the outdoors in a way that feels thrilling and safe.

A Safe Childhood Isn’t a Sheltered One

During Child Safety Week and beyond, we remain committed to a vision of childhood that balances freedom and care, risk and responsibility, wildness and wellbeing.

We’ll continue to design tools for imaginative explorers that encourage curiosity, foster independence and above all, keep safety at the heart of every adventure.

From all of us at The Den Kit Co., happy exploring!
