Why Grandparents Are Choosing Den Kits as the Perfect Christmas Gift for Grandchildren
The Story Behind The Den Kit
My dear friend Jo and I created The Den Kit 20 years ago because, as mothers and teachers we were concerned about how little time children spent in the outdoors and we absolutely knew that despite what many parents and even the children themselves think, with the right clothing, children LOVE playing outside. Of course, 20 years ago looked completely different to now where screens are so much more accessible. I think we’re all pretty worried when we look around and see that, wherever we go, everyone, both adults and children alike, seen to be transfixed in an almost zombie like way to screens. I am as guilty as anyone. It’s a concern - evidence is emerging that unfettered screen time is genuinely damaging our brains.
The Joy of Outdoor Play for Children and Grandparents
As a Grandparent, I still love those moments when the children return having spent quality fun time outside, cheeks flushed, muddy wellies, smelling of chilly air, thrilled with a mug of humble hot chocolate and ready for bed and a sound sleep.
Why “Go and Play Outside” Isn’t Enough Anymore
But experience has taught me that we can’t just say “go and play outside” and tip our offspring out into the garden because they will undoubtedly moan! Being outside ‘for the sake of it’ isn’t appealing to children. They need something meaningful to do and the fact that they’re doing it outside is irrelevant to them. They don’t know that it’s good for them!
Owning their very own den kit provides that compelling reason.
Choosing Meaningful Christmas Gifts for Grandchildren
As we head toward Christmas and the time for gift buying looms, I find that I am always searching for gifts for my grandchildren that will impact their lives and offer them experiences that I think are important - I think that’s my prerogative as a matriarch! I want to give them memories, adventures, joy, and learning. So many of my memories as a child were made surrounded by nature and now, as I head into my old-age, I find being in nature brings great comfort and joy. I want to give that gift to my grandchildren.
Building Dens Builds Confidence and Creativity
For a child, building your very own den, using your own ingenuity, building it alone or with others, is an activity that strikes a deep chord. A child is allowed the opportunity to have agency, to make their own safe shelter however they want. Along the way they learn skills, (they may ask for help to learn a new necessary skill like tying a knot that doesn’t come undone), they explore the physics of structures in a practical way and feel such as sense of accomplishment. Dens can be built all year round and just about anywhere!
A Perfect Gift for Playdates, Picnics, and Sleepovers
As grandparents we can throw one in the car if heading off for a picnic. I love having a den kit here waiting for when the grandchildren descend. I have spent so many happy hours watching the children create (no two designs are the same) and we even managed to sleep in it this summer! I know… I’m very noble! “Granny, can we do this EVERY night?”
Sustainable, Long-Lasting, and Loved by All
Den Kits are easy to gift and have no excess packaging. They can be given as a single or joint present as there is endless play value. There’s nothing to break so they last for just about ever! So durable. And, grandsons and granddaughter love them equally!
