A Valentine’s Nature Activity for Kids: Make Heart-Shaped Bird Feeders

Looking for a simple Valentine’s activity for children that also encourages a meaningful connection with nature? These heart-shaped bird feeders are a lovely way to celebrate love while caring for the wildlife right outside your door.

This easy garden craft began when we discovered a forgotten container of cranberries hiding at the back of the fridge - a little past their best for us, but absolutely perfect as a fruity treat for birds (and the occasional hopeful squirrel!).

With adult help to manage the sharp ends, we used some soft, bendy wire and gently shaped it into hearts, bringing the two ends together at the top. Threading the cranberries onto the wire was surprisingly satisfying, and simple enough for the children to do independently - a wonderful fine-motor activity that felt calm and purposeful.

Once the wire hearts were filled with berries, we secured the ends together with one final cranberry and hung them in our hazel tree using old gardening string. And just like that… ta-da! A handmade Valentine for the birds.

They looked especially beautiful swaying gently beside the bright new catkins - a small reminder that even in the quiet seasons, nature is full of life, colour, and connection.

A simple, heartfelt activity to share with children - and with the wildlife that calls your garden home.
